Spectacular Geminid meteor shower to grace skies tonight | When, where, how to watch it

The Geminid meteor shower can be seen in the sky tonight without any binoculars. Here is how, when and where you can watch it.

What is a Geminid meteor shower?

As per a report in PTI, the Geminid meteor shower is the most intense meteor shower of the year, Director of M P Birla Planetarium and well-known astrophysicist Debiprasad Duari said in a statement on Saturday.

According to a definition by Nasa, the Geminids first began appearing in the mid-1800s. However, the first showers were not noteworthy with only 10 - 20 meteors seen per hour. Since that time, the Geminids have grown to become one of the most major showers of the year. During its peak, 120 Geminid meteors can be seen per hour under perfect conditions. The Geminids are bright and fast meteors and tend to be yellow in colour.

According to a report in Space.com, the Geminids appear to emanate from the bright constellation Gemini, the twins. The Geminids are considered one of the best meteor showers every year because the individual meteors are bright, and they come fast and furious. In 2019, because of the nearly-full moon, the Geminids only produced about 20 to 30 may be visible per hour. Although it is best visible from the Northern Hemisphere, Geminid meteors can also be spotted from the Southern Hemisphere.

When can you watch the Geminid shower?

"While it is expected around December 13-14 night, one can probably also see some meteors on early evening hours of December 14," PTI quoted astrophysicist Duari as saying.

Moreover, at the peak of the meteor as predicted, in the middle of the night of December 13-14, at around 1-2 am, it will provide an opportunity to observe the "celestial fireworks", Duari said.

This year, as per the predictions, it may be possible to see 150 meteors per hour given the sky is dark and clear.

Even after the peak, bright meteors may be visible for the next few days.

"It will be the best meteor shower of 2020, no question about it," NASA meteor expert Bill Cooke told Space.com.

Can the meteor shower be viewed from India?

The Geminid meteor shower can be viewed from every part of India if the sky conditions are favourable, PTI reported.

At what time can we watch the Geminid meteor?

The best time to watch for the Geminids is about 2 a.m. in the local time zone, reported Space.com.

"The meteors tend to peak about 2 a.m. your local time wherever you're observing from, but can be seen as early as 9-10 p.m," the report said.

How to get the best view of the Geminid meteor shower?

According to Space.com, meteor showers don't require binoculars or telescopes to view — just your bare eyes. "Give your eyes about 20-30 minutes to adjust to the dark, then sit back and enjoy the show," the report said.

As per a report in earthsky.org, one can often catch 50 or more meteors per hour. On an optimum night for the Geminids, it’s possible to see 150 meteors per hour --- which might happen this year, given the moon-free skies accompanying this year’s Geminid meteor shower.

PTI reported that one should not be alarmed while viewing this "heavenly phenomenon, since these meteors will cause no harm to anything on Earth", astrophysicist Duari said.
